What Is The Future Of JB Bickerstaff?

With the recent struggles of the Cavaliers a lot of attention has been put on the Head Coach, JB Bickerstaff. Many conversations have been taking place amongst Cavs fans. Is it time to move on from JB Bickerstaff? Today we will be discussing the future of JB with the Cavs.

One of the well documented problems with his coaching is the lack of variety and movement on offense. While watching the game you can often see the same double screen play for Darius Garland and the same offball screen for Cedi Osman that often goes nowhere.

These plays on their own are not bad calls but they are not set up with anything beforehand. Additionally these calls are not faked well. As soon as the ball gets to half court it is simple to find out which play they are running. There is little to no misdirection in the offense which allows competent defenses to shut them down which leads to tough, contested shots that weigh down an offense that should be better than it is.

Another criticized part of Bickerstaff’s has been his rotations. Some problems have been fixed as of late, such as not having either Sexton or Garland on the court for large stretches, but there are still many areas that are still lacking behind. For one the double center lineup should not exist. Do not even think about going to it again.

He also tends to not play the hot hand, or the reverse in many circumstances. When a player like Cedi or Dean Wade is struggling he gives them too many opportunities. There is no shame in turning to a guy like Lamar Stevens when your Plan A is not working. That is the sign of a great coach, their ability to adjust on the fly and make adjustments mid game.

Personally I would give him the rest of the season to show improvement but if some of the previously established problems are not fixed I would fire him in search of a proven head coach. Someone like D’antoni or Kenny Atkinson. We are not in the situation to take another chance on an unproven coach.
